  9. instinct in them.  Wherever  it  might
  10. be, at  work, in  school  or  at  home

  13. Even as small children, we  played war
  14. and always wanted to be on the winning
  15. team.  In school, most people tend  to
  16. want  to  be with the popular  people,
  17. whether if  they  are  geeks  or  not.
  18. At work, everyone wants  higher wages,
  19. a better position and does not want to
  20. settle for second best.

  28. The Scene is also very competitive and
  29.  just  as  in  real  life,  there  are
  30. indicators   of   our    success   and
  31. popularity.  In real life, it might be
  32. money, respect and a nice car.  In the
  33. Scene, it is  the respect of being the
  34. one topping the charts.

  36. Charts  have  been around for ages, it
  37. seems.  »CL7:The Eurochart  has been around
  38. the  longest»CL1:  and  together with other
  39. charts, Showtime in the last years and
  40. others  no longer  in production, they
  41. are  the   factors    that   determine
  42. popularity  and  respect in the Scene.

  45. only the indicator of popularity»CL1:.  The
  46. reason  Sceners  end  up on the charts
  47. is  usually  that they have produced a
  48. piece of art that is highly  admirable
  49. and therefore  worthy  of respect from
  50. other Sceners. One only needs  to take
  51. a look at the  charts  to see that the
  52. ones topping  the  charts are  usually
  53. those  who  are  active   and  produce
  54. quality  graphics,  music,  or   code.

  56. However,   as    many   well-respected
  57. Sceners have left the Scene throughout
  58. the  years,  their  presence  on   the
  59. charts has  not  decreased.   Instead,
  60. many Sceners who are no  longer active
  61. continue  to  linger  on in the top of
  62. the charts. Like ghosts from the past,
  63. they  continue  to  haunt  the  active
  64. people issue after issue.

  66. Should  this  be so? Should people who
  67. are no longer active  continue to fill
  68. the  charts?   I  do  not believe this
  69. is right. There are many Sceners whose
  70. goal  is  to one day reach the charts.
  71. They work hard to do so.  They produce
  72. excellent   graphics,   awesome music,
  73. and  thrilling  code.  Yet, they never
  74. reach the  charts  in  many  cases. »CL6:Is
  75. it fair  to  them  to be left out just
  76. because  legends  linger  on   in  the
  77. charts?»CL1: Surely, it is not.

  79. Some  years  ago, someone suggested  a
  80. similar thing  to what this article is
  81. proposing. »CL7:Someone had the idea to add
  82. another chart, just for those legends,
  83. in order for the ordinary charts would
  84. be  freed  up  for  active Sceners»CL1:. So
  85. far,  the  only  chart  known  to this
  86. writer that  has  actually implemented
  87. this system is Showtime.

  89. Recently,   there    has   been   more
  90. controversy  concerning   the  charts.
  91. Wade wrote an article about the Polish
  92. dominance of  the charts. He contended
  93. that  since  so  many  to  us  unknown
  94. Polish Sceners are on the charts, they
  95. must be fixed. That is, Polish Sceners
  96. vote  for  their  friends.   Magic  of
  97. Nah-Kolor   sharply    disagreed    in
  98. Eurochart 41.  There is  some truth to
  99. both sides.   There  might  be a great
  100. presence  of  Polish  Sceners  on  the
  101. charts but why blame them for that? At
  102. least  they  are voting. Many of us in
  103. the west seem  to  be too lazy to vote
  104. so in the end it is our own fault when
  105. the  Polish  Sceners  end  up  on  the
  106. charts.  How  can  we expect people to
  107. be on the charts if we do not take the
  108. time to actually vote?

  110. At   the   same   time,  it is easy to
  111. complain   about   including   or  not
  112. including people on the charts. In the
  113. end,  it  is  very  much  an  activity
  114. issue. »CL6:The Sceners who desire to reach
  115. the  charts  need  to  be  active »CL1: and
  116. everyone  else  out there  need to get
  117. their  rear  in gear and take the time
  118. to vote. How else can we expect to get
  119. the results we desire?
